Ûbolya of House Topaz
Craftmistress of House Topaz, Inventor of the Ironforged
“Garbed only in the finest regalia befitting a noble of her stature, the woman before you is the very picture of dwarven aristocracy. With flowing gown, intricate hairdo and scads of topaz jewelry, all her outer finery seems to mask an inner unctuousness, a certain intangible slimy quality obscured by ever-so-many layers of civility and courtship. While her outward appearance, nasty wart included, suggest anything but, she reminds you most of a spider, balancing predatorily atop the many strands of an ever-increasing web.”
One of three ruling members of both House Topaz and Cantilever, City of Constructs, Ûbolya rose to power some decades ago and has remained at her elite station ever since. A brilliant inventor and a cunning businesswoman, she’s made a veritable fortune on her thousands of clockwork inventions – everything from her family’s floating stead at the heart of the city to her army of ironforged soldiers, which have all but replaced Cantilever’s traditional police force.
In her youth, she married for love instead of politics – a poor craftsman, Vezek of House Talc – and her father, in anger, disinherited her. She gave birth to one child by Vezek – Vytoza of House Talc – until her husband eventually died in a carriage accident in 215 F.I. With her husband dead, Ûbolya returned to House Topaz and quickly ascended through the ranks.
Her second husband, Vencel, Loremaster of House Topaz, is the estranged brother of Kajetan of House Jasper – the marriage, ostensibly gained Ûbolya little political advantage and is, amongst dwarven circles largely seen as a personal blow to her rival House. Recently, her husband has fallen dreadfully ill and has become entirely bedridden. No one, besides the inner circle of House Topaz, has seen the Loremaster outside the Stead in over two years. On their voyage to Iomeraz, the adventurers were scandalized to discover this lie, making the acquaintance of the creature that had once been Vencel in a hidden House Topaz installation on the south pole.
Recent reports indicated that she, her husband and many of her inner circle, where critically injured during the incident of the collapsing Stead. When The Nameless Company next encountered her, however, she appeared to be in fine health and, in fact, had pioneered a new species of ironforged, which she referred to as her “warforged.”
